Workers who filed a class-action lawsuit against a Kansas slaughterhouse for unpaid wages and overtime have asked a federal judge to bar Creekstone Farms Premium Beef from discovering their immigration status during the litigation.

The state’s new crackdown includes bans on renting to and driving illegal immigrants and requires police to check residency status during arrests or stops if they suspect a person is an immigrant.

In a June 25 story, The Associated Press reported that Arizona’s new immigration law requires police to check the immigration status of anyone suspected of being in the country illegally. The story should have made clear that police can question people about their immigration status during traffic stops or other suspected violations if there is “reasonable suspicion” they are in the country …
