In October, the U.S. Department of Justice challenged South Carolina’s immigration law in federal court, charging that parts of the law are “unconstitutional and interfere with the federal government’s authority to set and enforce immigration policy.”

The Obama administration’s legal campaign against restrictive state immigration laws has led to a bitter standoff in Alabama, where Justice Department attorneys are investigating possible civil rights violations. The federal government already has sued Alabama over its new law, one of three such lawsuits against states that have cracked down on illegal immigration.

The federal government asked an appeals court Friday to halt the Alabama immigration law considered by many the toughest in the U.S., saying it could have dire diplomatic consequences abroad, invites discrimination and merely forces illegal immigrants into neighboring states.

Lawyers for the federal government and for a coalition of civil rights groups asked a federal judge Wednesday to block a new Alabama law cracking down on illegal immigration, arguing that it stomps on such basic rights as free speech and free travel.
